History
The Beetle got into its stride in the ‘60s: 1,200cc continued with 34 bhp engine, drum brakes, 6V electrics and boring reliability. New 1,300cc had 40 bhp and stronger suspension, while 1,500 has 44 bhp and dual circuit disc/drum brakes. Wider track for 1300 from '66, all 1500s have this. External fuel filler,12V electrics, auto option and vertical headlamps from '67, bigger luggage compartment and more power for 1300/1500 from '70. '72-'73 1300S and '75-'77 1200L have 1,584cc engine. 1300/1500 engines more thirsty and not as reliable as 1200. Rust between doors and rear fenders arches is difficult to fix.
