History

The 1970 Firebird received a new body that is still striking today. Convertibles were no longer produced, but the Trans Am continued as the top of the line. As other manufacturers killed off their performance cars, Pontiac added the 455 Super Duty in 1973-1974—the last of the true muscle cars. The interesting OHC inline 6 cylinder engine was gone, replaced with a plodding OHV straight-6. Trans Ams and any 455SD-powered Firebird are most collectible from this era. Expect to pay $9,500 - $28,000 for an excellent basic Firebird Trans Am in this generation, and up to $50,000 for a 455, but only the 1973 model year.
