History

Pontiac’s Mustang killer looked like nothing more than a thinly disguised Camaro — and it was. But while the two GM pony cars shared most components, the Firebird had one important distinction: Pontiac power. The first Firebirds had an optional 400 cubic inch V8, while the Camaro initially had only 350. Then there was the spunky Sprint OHC straight six, America’s first mass-produced overhead cam engine, that could humble some V8s. The 1969 Firebird Trans Am is the most collectible of the era, especially with Ram Air IV power, as well as any other Ram Air IV powered Firebird. Forgeries are possible, so always get an expert opinion as to authenticity. Expect to pay anywhere from $12,000 to $100,000 for a first-generation Firebird, depending mainly on the engine selection and body style. The top half of the price range is limited to the 1969 Trans-Am.

TR6s are a perennial entry-level collector car. A robust drivetrain, and good aftermarket parts supply has kept more than a few on the road. Of course, they rust everywhere so good ones bring a premium.
