Market Appeal

The 190SL looked a bit like a scaled-down 300SL but that was all the cars had in common. It traded off its big sister's reputation and was plainly aimed at American boulevards, not circuits. Engine was a twin carb version of the standard 190 1.9-liter unit, and the four-speed all-synchro gearbox had a floor-mounted lever.
Slight styling revisions in '55, power brakes from '56. Very expensive for what it was - a shortened 190 sedan floorpan, only mildly fast, not especially pretty and no sharp handler. Removable hardtop coupe and roadster were offered.
