History

Giugiaro excelled himself when he designed the Esprit, first shown as a concept car as early as 1972. Dramatic two-seat wedge shaped plastic body clothed backbone chassis, independent suspension and disc brakes all round. Transaxle came from Citroen's SM and 907 engine was mounted centrally.
SIs had cooling problems, sorted by '79 S2 with its wider wheels, better interior, integrated spoiler. S2.2 of 1980 had the larger 917 2,174cc engine (same power but more torque). A brilliant supercar in terms of handling and image, but flawed in so many ways. Can be picked up very cheaply.

As the muscle car phenomenon continued to develop and mature into the late sixties, Plymouth sought sought to produce a car that would be a fresh throwback to the movement's cultural roots: a very cheap ride that would simply go fast. For less than $3k, the Road Runner offered a 383-ci hemi that put out a formidable 335 hp, with a no-frills interior upholstered in plain cloth with bench seats. Plymouth licensed the name of The Warner Bros. character (for $50k, reportedly), as well as his signature "beep beep," to be emulated by the horn. The combo was a wild success, and Road Runner sales instantly overtook the higher-priced Plymouth GTX. Today it stands as an icon of late sixties muscle.
